MERISCREEN® Malaria Pf/PAN Ag — Differential Detection of All Plasmodium Species

MERISCREEN® Malaria Pf/PAN Ag is a rapid immunochromatographic test (ICT) for the differential diagnosis of malaria in human whole blood. It detects HRP-II antigen specific to Plasmodium falciparum and pLDH antigen common to all Plasmodium species (PAN — including P. vivax, P. ovale, P. malariae, P. knowlesi), enabling species differentiation critical for treatment selection.

Why Pf/PAN Matters

Most competing malaria rapid tests detect only Pf and Pv (falciparum and vivax). The Pf/PAN format goes further — the PAN line detects pLDH from any Plasmodium species, including P. ovale and P. malariae which are increasingly reported in India but missed by Pf/Pv-only kits. In a country where mixed infections occur and species misidentification leads to treatment failure, PAN coverage provides a clinically meaningful safety net.

How It Works

Add 5 µL (or one loop full) of whole blood to the sample well, followed by 4 drops of assay buffer. The test cassette contains two test lines: Pf line (anti-HRP-II monoclonal antibodies specific to P. falciparum) and PAN line (anti-pLDH antibodies detecting all Plasmodium species). If the corresponding antigens are present, colloidal gold conjugate complexes migrate and form visible colored bands. Results are read at 20 minutes. No sample preprocessing, no instruments, no electricity required.
