Merisoft is Meril's surgical catgut — a natural absorbable suture, supplied plain and chromic.
Plain or chromic — the difference
- Plain catgut absorbs fastest. Used where tissue heals quickly and the suture is not needed for long — mucosa, subcutaneous fat, ligating small vessels.
- Chromic catgut is chromic-salt treated, which slows absorption and holds the tissue for longer. The usual choice for episiotomy and perineal repair, oral and gynaecological work.

Choosing between catgut and a synthetic
Catgut is absorbed by the body breaking down collagen, so the rate varies more between patients than a synthetic does. Where a predictable holding time matters — fascia, or a patient who heals slowly — a synthetic absorbable such as polyglactin 910 or polydioxanone is the safer choice. Where the tissue heals fast and cost matters, catgut remains the practical option, which is why it is still standard for episiotomy.
