Product details
Braided polyester suture — non-absorbable, so the strength you put in stays there for life. Mericron XL is Meril's polyester suture and sits in their cardiovascular suture range; the same suture is made with PTFE pledgets as Mericron XL P.
Why a surgeon reaches for polyester
- It never absorbs — for a repair that must hold permanently, nothing degrades away under it
- Braided, so it handles and ties like silk but carries far more load
- Smooth surface and a pliable structure, which is what you want tying down into a deep annulus
Where it is used
- Cardiac — valve replacement and annuloplasty. Usually double-needle (DN) and pledgeted. We stock both green and white; many surgeons alternate the two colours so neighbouring stitches stay easy to tell apart in the annulus
- Tendon and ligament repair, where the repair has to hold for good
- Fascia and abdominal wall, and any heavy soft-tissue approximation needing high tensile strength
Polyester, polypropylene or steel — which one
- Polyester (Mericron XL) — the strongest handling choice of the three. It is braided, so it is not the one for a contaminated field
- Polypropylene (Filaprop) — monofilament, slides through tissue, the usual choice for vascular anastomosis and for contaminated or infected tissue
- Steel (Meristeel) — sternal closure
