Product details
Polypropylene suture — monofilament, non-absorbable, blue. Filaprop is Meril's polypropylene, and it sits in their cardiovascular suture range as well as general surgery; the pledgeted codes are Filaprop P.
Why polypropylene
- It slides. A monofilament passes through the vessel wall with the least drag — which is why it is the standard for vascular anastomosis
- No braid. Nothing for bacteria to track along, so it is the choice for contaminated or infected tissue where a braided suture should not go
- Optimal elasticity and elongation, and it holds a knot down cleanly
- Some codes come in a less-memory tray, so the strand lies straight instead of fighting the coil it was packed in
Where it is used
- Vascular and cardiac — anastomosis, and the pledgeted codes for valve work
- Hernia repair — fixing the mesh, from the same range (Filaprop Mesh)
- Skin, and any contaminated field where a braid is the wrong answer
Which non-absorbable suture, and why
| Polypropylene (Filaprop) | Monofilament. Least drag through tissue, nothing for bacteria to track along. Vascular anastomosis, contaminated or infected tissue, skin |
| Polyamide / nylon (Filamide) | Monofilament. Cheaper everyday closure, skin and general surgery |
| Silk (Filasilk) | Braided natural. The easiest to handle and tie; ligation, drains, bowel serosa |
| Polyester (Mericron XL) | Braided, strongest of the four. Valve and tendon work, available with pledgets |
| Steel (Meristeel) | Sternal closure |
All five ranges are stocked here, so the whole non-absorbable list comes off one order.
