Polyamide suture — nylon. Monofilament, non-absorbable. Filamide is Meril's polyamide, the everyday closure suture.
Why nylon
- Easy to handle, and it passes through tissue smoothly
- Excellent histocompatibility — the tissue leaves it alone
- Monofilament, so no braid for bacteria to track along
- The economical choice where a permanent monofilament is all the case needs
Where it is used
- Skin closure, the largest use by volume
- General surgery, and retention sutures in heavier gauges
- Fine gauges for plastic and ophthalmic work
If the case is vascular or the field is contaminated, most surgeons move to polypropylene (Filaprop) instead — it handles better under tension and is the vascular standard.
