About this range

Which suture for which case

Most buyers search by material rather than brand name. This is what we stock and what each one is for.

Material Our brand Typically used for
Polydioxanone (PDO) Filaxyn Fascia and tough tissue. Holds longest of the synthetic absorbables — the usual choice in diabetic and immunosuppressed patients, where slow healing risks dehiscence.
Polyglecaprone 25 Filapron Subcuticular and skin closure where the scar will be seen — caesarean, thyroid, paediatric, face and neck. Monofilament.
Polyglactin 910 PGLA, Mitsu General soft tissue approximation and ligation. Braided, mid-term absorbable. Mitsu also available with triclosan or chlorhexidine.
Silk Filasilk Non-absorbable braided. Drain fixation, ligation, oral surgery.
Polypropylene Filaprop Non-absorbable monofilament. Vascular, hernia mesh fixation, tendon.
Catgut, plain and chromic Merisoft Rapidly absorbed. Mucosa, episiotomy, superficial layers.
Barbed Pinion Knotless closure. PDO and PGA-PCL, undyed and violet.

PDO or polyglactin — how to choose

The practical difference is how long the suture keeps its strength. Polyglactin 910 loses most of its tensile strength within a few weeks, which is fine for tissue that heals fast. Polydioxanone holds far longer, which is why it is chosen for fascia and for patients whose healing is slow. Where the scar is going to be visible, a monofilament like polyglecaprone 25 is preferred, because a braid drags through the dermis and can track bacteria.
